I think sometimes we tend to think of God as a rule book or book of laws, dos and don'ts instead of the loving Creator he is. We don't consider the idea that God is not some big ogre in the sky that wants control. He didn't make us mindless robots to do his bidding and yield to his every whim and command.
No, God is a person who created us in His/Her image so that the love that embodies who God is could be freely shared with like beings. He made us rational creatures with a freewill and the ability to give and receive love on purpose.
God is love, and just as we desire intimate fellowship and interaction, so does he. Just as we want someone to look into our heart and understand our wants, needs, and affections, God does too! God is passionately bubbling over with love, affection, and longing. He longs for us to know. He longs for us to feel. He longs for us to experience the peace and joy of being fully loved and perfectly understood.
Of course, he understands; of course, he knows; of course he sees. God sees deeply into each one of us and knows the innermost workings of our mind and conscience. He is aware of every minute detail of our make-up. Of course, after all He is the one who created us, but he patiently waits for us to open our hearts to him and reveal our secrets. He anticipates the opportunity to be able to come to our aid, speak meaningful words into our soul, and give us practical advice.
Why? Simple - because of his nature and character. God is patient, good, and kind - not at all like the image painted in most church circles week after week. God is gentle and respectful. He will accept your choices and respect your "No" - spoken or implied. He will never force himself on you. He will not make you choose the good, and although he knows what's good for you, he will not pressure you into it. He will not make you choose life. God desires to know you intimately and lavish you with his love. The yearning is so intense that he could explode, but temperance in him will not allow it.
But think about it... don't you want that? Who doesn't? Deep down we all crave it. Most of us just fill that void with other things because we do not believe it is possible. We do not believe it truly exists. Let me tell you: There is nothing like living daily perfectly aware of your purpose and calling, knowing that you are loved and known, walking hand-in-hand with the one who fashioned you and designed your nature.
To know God and his undying love for you is substantial. To actually partake in that goodness is true sustenance. Living in connection with the Eternal is freedom and joy. Knowing God is really living since he is the source of all life. He is the Creator, the one who crafted you and every element essential for your existence. To be linked up with Holy... now this is life eternal.
"And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
~Jesus as recorded by John in John 17:3 ESV
